Pharaoh Hound Dog Training Classes
Dog: Bogart
"Steve has recently helped me with my 3-year-old Pharaoh Hound mix, Bogart, that I rescued. My initial hope was to stop Bogart from showing signs of overstimulation when greeting (or seeing) other dogs, such as lunging and barking. But after the first visit, Bogart was walking on a loose leash without even being prompted. Not only did Bogart learn a lot of basic commands and redirecting behaviors from Steve, but I learned so much that I will carry into the future when continuing to train Bogart. What I enjoyed most about Steve was that he tried many different tools (all that worked!) with Bogart and really let me decide what would work best. As Bogart continued to have some "focusing" issues, Steve suggested that I try using a vibration collar to help with the focusing commands. While I am very opposed to any sort of shock collar, this vibration collar works wonders and does not harm the dog in any way. Steve even made another trip out to help teach me how to use it correctly! From starting with a dog that couldn't be around any other dogs without making a scene, to now having a dog that will stop on verbal command at the dog park, I would recommend Steve to anyone looking for a great dog trainer!" - Katie G.

Specialized Training for Pharaoh Hounds
Katie's success story with Bogart is a perfect example of our approach. We provide owners with a deep understanding of their breed's unique needs.
An Ancient & Unique Breed
To effectively train a Pharaoh Hound, you must first respect their heritage. Pharaoh Hounds are not your average retrievers or shepherds.
- An Independent Hunter: As an ancient sighthound, Pharaoh Hounds were bred to hunt independently, using sight, sound and scent. This makes them brilliant problem-solvers, but also less inclined to follow commands blindly.
- Incredible Prey Drive: Their instinct to chase is powerful and deeply ingrained. This is not "bad behavior," but a core part of their genetics that must be managed.
- A Sensitive Nature: Despite their independence, Pharaoh Hounds are sensitive. They can shut down with harsh methods, making a trusting, positive relationship with their owner essential for success.
Our Sighthound-Specific Training Solutions
Just as we did with Katie and Bogart, our private lessons are tailored to conquer the most common Pharaoh Hound challenges. We focus on building a partnership between you and your dog.
- Building Powerful Focus & Engagement: We turn training into a rewarding game. You'll learn how to capture your hound's attention and make yourself more interesting than any squirrel, which is key to overcoming their independent nature.
- Mastering a Reliable Recall: For a sighthound, a solid recall is the most important safety command. We use modern, positive techniques to build a recall that is strong enough to compete with their instinct to run.
- Calming Reactivity & Managing Prey Drive: We give you the tools to calmly manage your dog's reaction to triggers. You will learn how to redirect their focus and transform stressful walks into enjoyable experiences.
- Using Humane, Effective Tools: Every dog is an individual. For focusing issues, like Bogart had, we may suggest modern tools like a vibration collar, never a shock collar, to humanely get your dog's attention. We always ensure you are comfortable and understand how to use any recommended tool correctly.
Your Pharaoh Hound has incredible potential. Let's unlock it together.
